Northwestern Elementary School kindergartners got a taste of Louisiana today at their school.

The event was based on Johnette Downing’s song and book, “Today is Monday in Louisiana,” which takes children through a culinary calendar that brings a meal a day to the table representing Cajun, Creole, African, and French foods from Louisiana. As the song and story goes, on Monday, there are red beans to eat, Tuesday brings Po-boys, Wednesday is gumbo day, and so on.

Students were able to sample red beans and rice, po-boys, and gumbo, as well as jambalaya, fried catfish, and beignets.

Zachary Mayor David McDavid fried the food with help from several city employees. Parent volunteers served the food.

The students were able to, "pass a good time".
