At the city council meeting on April, 9th, the council declared March 12 a "Day of Solemn Remembrance and Honor" for officers John Herty and Chris Lawton.

Reserve Officer Christopher Michael Lawton of the Zachary Police Department tragically lost his life on March 12, 2018, when he was intentionally struck by a vehicle while attempting to serve a narcotics-related felony warrant. Officer Lawton, who was also a full-time firefighter with the Zachary Fire Department, was conducting a surveillance operation with a fellow officer at a Walmart parking lot. They identified a wanted subject inside a U-Haul truck and moved to apprehend him. As they approached on foot, the driver accelerated, pinning Officer Lawton between the truck and a shopping cart corral, leading to fatal injuries. The driver was later apprehended and faced charges including first-degree murder and hit-and-run. Officer Lawton's commitment to his community is remembered as he served as a part-time, unpaid reserve officer for 10 years alongside his firefighting duties. His loss was deeply felt by both the community and his colleagues, who remember him as a devoted public servant and a heroic individual.

Chief John Herty, a revered figure in Zachary, passed away in 2011 but left a lasting impact through his extensive service. He was known for his deep community involvement and his leadership as both a police chief and a dedicated participant in local sports and youth programs. His legacy continues to be honored in the community, including through naming a field at the Zachary Youth Park after him. Chief Herty is remembered for his compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving others. Mayor McDavid credits Chief Herty for bringing him into the police force and serving as his long-time mentor.

Both men are celebrated for their dedication and service, leaving behind legacies that continue to inspire and resonate within the community.
