 Laurie Hunt's Powder Room

Maybe it’s because, like me, many homeowners had PTSD from the near-herculean efforts it took to remove wallpaper at some point in the past. Or maybe we’ve been brainwashed by the gray washing trend that removed all personality from our homes. Either way, what was once regarded as a relic of the past has made a triumphant return, offering an array of modern patterns, textures, and colors to suit every taste and style. The wallpaper trend has been back for at least a decade, but generally only available to those who had the bravery to try it, and hire a professional to install it. Now that peel and stick wallpaper is widely available, though, homeowners are having fun sticking a bit of panache onto their walls.

Gorgeous spaces using wallpaper by Melissa Ortegas

While hardly a new idea, wallpaper has recently become a mainstream design staple for high-end decorators and DIYers alike. My fearless friend Melissa Ortegas has no less than four patterns in her Zachary home–from the foyer, to a decorative border in the dining room, to an accent wall for her teenager, she’s worked with both pre-pasted and peel and stick. “Peel and stick is easier to apply if you have very little patience, due to not needing to soak it or wet the back to activate the paste,” Melissa explains. Peel and stick can be done with one person, but pre-pasted needs at least two people so the paper doesn’t fold back on itself. “It’s also very forgiving,” she says. “You can rearrange it without it losing its stick.” From bold geometric prints to delicate floral motifs, wallpaper adds depth, texture, and personality to any room. No matter the budget or the space, there’s a wallpaper out there for you! Here’s a visual roundup of some of Zachary’s papered spaces.
