Have you been to the zoo lately?

If you haven't been to the Baton Rouge Zoo in a couple of years (guilty!), you're in for some pleasant surprises.

The state-of-the-art underwater pygmy hippo exhibit just held its ribbon cutting this month, and the brand new attraction is impressive, to say the least. The hippos are the highlight of Sapo Springs, the zoo’s new West African Expedition. There are less than 20 in the United States, and only about 100 worldwide, so to have our very own pygmy hippos here is a big deal! Everyone, meet Spencer and Ginger:

In addition to the adorable miniature hippos, Sapo Springs includes colorful African Ciclids and an African Aviary full of endangered West African birds. You’ll also be able to see black and white colobus monkeys hanging around. The entire area is vibrant and immersive, and features an attractive shaded breezeway with ample seating to view the pygmy hippos.

While much of the zoo is still under major construction (bonus points, for the kids who love to watch heavy equipment do its thing!), there are still some animals to be seen - and the playground and petting zoo remain a top attraction as well.

So if you're planning a trip to Disney's Animal Kingdom with the little ones in the next couple of years, save that money and just venture a few miles down the road for a truly wild experience. Zoo tickets are $8.75 for adults/teens and $5.75 for kids ages 2-12. Babies 1 and under are free and Seniors are $7.75. Admissions gate open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily and zoo grounds close at 5 p.m. But here’s a special tip: you can get in from 2-4 on Wednesday afternoons for only $1.50!
