Get ready to immerse yourself in a vibrant celebration of culture and heritage! Porch & Parish is thrilled to announce that we are hosting a month-long tribute to Hispanic Heritage Month. Over the next four weeks, we'll be diving into the many aspects of what being Hispanic in the Zachary community looks like, from the festive side of running a restaurant to understanding how to properly celebrate a Quinceanera.
But first, here are the events we have, starting TONIGHT! We're kicking off with a P&P x Aji City Popup event tonight, where we'll be raffling off two tickets to our Family Dinner at Agave Blue on 9/22 (valued at $70!). Kids eat free next Friday night, and we'll also be doing a screening of the movie Coco on a giant inflatable projector, while the grownups enjoy live music on the patio.
What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities in the United States. This includes all persons who are from, or have descendants from, Spain, Mexico, Central or South America, and The Caribbean. Now celebrated September 15th through October 15th, this national holiday was originally established as Hispanic Heritage week in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. This week-long celebration extended from September 15th through the 22nd to encompass the independence days of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In 1988, it was expanded into a month-long celebration by President Ronald Reagan not only to include the independence days of several other Latin-American countries, but to also pay further tribute to the Hispanic culture that plays such an important role in American society. Now, this month is recognized and celebrated by thousands of cities and organizations all over the country.
How are we celebrating it?
We're kicking off with a P&P x Aji City Popup event tonight, where we'll be raffling off two tickets to our Family Dinner at Agave Blue on 9/22 (valued at $70!). Then, for the next four weeks, we'll dive into the vibrant flavors of the many Mexican restaurants around Z and choose what we think is the best margarita in town. We’ll get to know some Latinx and Hispanic members of our community with our weekly profiles. And we'll publish digital articles on everything from important historical figures to how to properly pronounce words in Spanish. Join us as we explore these incredible stories, traditions, and achievements of Hispanic and Latinx communities that have left an undeniable mark on the city of Zachary.
