Porch and Parish Celebrates Black History Month

Feb 01, 2024 11:10AM ● By Lauren Pope
After a January that seemed to last a thousand years, it's finally February.  It's a big month for us here in Louisiana. We've got Mardi Gras Break, Valentine's Day, and, the biggest thing of all- Black History Month!  We'll be writing a series of digital features on some incredible members of  Zachary's Black community.

We are going to introduce you to people from all walks of life who embody the idea of Black Excellence. We've tried to find a good mix of ages and professions for our profiles so you can get a good picture of what makes Zachary's Black community so vibrant and special.

We'd also love to hear from you! Do you know someone who is doing something special that you think deserves some recognition? Let us know! Our goal with this month's digital content is to highlight as many people as we can who are, in some way, making Zachary just a little bit better. In last year's Black History Month spread in the magazine, we called these people History Makers and we know that our little city is full of them.

There's a quote from the great Howard Thurman that says "Contacts without fellowship tend to express themselves in the kind of understanding that is strikingly unsympathetic. There is understanding of a kind, but it is without the healing and reinforcement of personality." We feel strongly here that our mission is to develop fellowship and camaraderie between all of our neighbors. Our magazine is for all of Zachary. We hope that our readers enjoy the chance to learn more about each other and that we can use this month to foster a spirit of community.

So, kick back, relax, and join us on this virtual porch where stories come to life, perspectives are shared, and Black history is celebrated.  Let's make this February one to remember!
