Summer Reading Is Here! Adventure is out there! In fact, look no further than your Library! Join in the fun with East Baton Rouge Parish Library’s 2024 Summer Reading Program, "Adventure Begins at Your Library!" Running through Thursday, August 15, enjoy an entire summer of FREE programs, workshops, storytimes, concerts, and performances for all ages, scheduled throughout the Library system. Track your reading and earn rewards! It’s easy! First, sign up at your local Library location or online at ebrpl.beanstack.org, starting June 1. Then, read books and log them into your Beanstack account to earn virtual badges and completion rewards, as well as entries for weekly prize drawings! There are reading challenges and incentives for kids, teens, and even adults!

Adventure awaits! We’ll see you at the Library this summer for exciting events and reading rewards!

 

4th of July Concert Join the Baton Rouge Concert Band at the Main Library at Goodwood on Thursday, July 4 at 7 p.m. for a patriotic performance! Celebrate America’s independence with composers like John Philip Sousa, Irving Berlin, and Morton Gould. Revel in the natural beauty of our country through compositions like “America, The Beautiful” and “Sunrise at Angel’s Gate.” Be reminded of the spirit that built our country through compositions like “American Salute,” “An American Fanfare,” and “Within These Hallowed Halls.” Wear your red, white, and blue; bring your flags to wave; and don’t forget your water!

Teen Academic Club: Ask a Professor Teens are invited to the Scotlandville Branch Library on Wednesday, July 17 at 3:30 p.m. for a Zoom meeting with NASA scientist and professor, Dr. Daniel Rodriguez Hart. He will explain his work and field questions from the audience. Take advantage of this excellent opportunity to learn about physics and related careers.

Cool Careers Teens and 20-somethings are invited to Cool Careers, a fun and engaging series to learn about various in-demand careers from experts in their respective fields, brought to you by EBRPL’s Career Center. On Fridays in July at 10 a.m., presenters will share their knowledge and experiences, and give an overview of their career fields at the Main Library at Goodwood. Lady Chops Hey teens! Join Lady Chops (a.k.a. Elizabeth Vidos), a professional drummer/percussionist who performed with STOMP off Broadway, for an energetic and interactive performance! See dates/times and locations below.
  • Wednesday, July 24 at 3 p.m. – Zachary Branch Library
Virtual Author Talk Series for Kids and Teens! This month, we are featuring four amazing K-12 authors in our Virtual Author Talk Series! While these books are written for a younger audience, the whole family is invited to join us! Each live, virtual event features a different bestselling author, along with an interactive Q&A session where participants can ask questions directly to the author.   • Tuesday, July 9 at 1 p.m. (PreK-2nd grade) - Join us for a visit to Deckawoo Drive with everyone’s favorite adventure loving pig, Mercy Watson! Newbery Medal winning author Kate DiCamillo will be sharing stories behind the creation of her early chapter book series, the original Mercy Watson, and the follow-up series, Tales from Deckawoo Drive. We will also be celebrating the publication of the final book in the Mercy Watson series!

 

  • Tuesday, July 16 at 1 p.m. (3rd-6th grade) – Would you survive a zombie apocalypse? Join us to talk with New York Times bestselling author Max Brallier about The Last Kids on Earth, both the book series and the animated series on Netflix. In this virtual event, Max will share how he came up with the different monsters and villains as well as the unique ways that Jack and his friends figure out how to defeat them.

 

  • Tuesday, July 23 at 1 p.m. (9th-12th grade) – You’re invited to learn about the power of poetry with Elizabeth Acevedo! Acevedo will provide a short reading from her National Book Award-winning and New York Times bestselling novel-in-verse, The Poet X about an Afro-Latina heroine who tells her story with blazing words and powerful truth.

 

  • Tuesday, July 30 at 1 p.m. (5th-8th grade) - Join this year’s winner of the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, Dan Santat, as he inspires tweens and teens to tell their own stories through graphic novels. His winning book, A First Time for Everything, is a graphic memoir based on his own awkward middle school years and the trip to Europe that changed his life.

 

Write Time! with Boo Milton Join us on Monday, July 22 at 6 p.m. at the Main Library at Goodwood for Write Time!, a FREE poetry and general creative writing session for adults ages 18-33. Beginners and seasoned writers will enjoy creating poems and spoken word
