Longtime Zachary Resident and OB/Gyn Dr. Sal Lusco Has Passed Away

Jun 27, 2024 11:22AM ● By Lauren Pope
Sal Lusco left the blessed on earth to be with the blessed in heaven on June 23, 2024. He was born in New Orleans, LA on August 4, 1936. He was a longtime resident of Zachary, LA. Sal was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, loyal brother, uncle and friend. His big heart and kind soul made everyone welcomed in his home. In the eyes of his children and grandchildren, he was larger than life.

He was a graduate of Jesuit High School (1955), Loyola University (1959), LSU School of Medicine (1963), Tulane University Residency in obstetrics and gynecology (1969). He began his OB/GYN private practice in New Orleans and moved to Zachary in 1971 where he continued his practice for 30 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Camilla Michael Lusco; his son, Mark Lusco (Missy) of Baton Rouge; his daughters, Michelle Lusco Cambias (John) of Baton Rouge, and Laura Lusco Howell of Zachary; a sister Jane Lusco Lowe and two brothers, Santo Lusco and Ronald Lusco of New Orleans; 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and family friend, Amos Milton Thornton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Santo Lusco.

He served his country during the Vietnam era as a captain in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1965 to 1967. He was a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, fellow of American College of Surgeons, and member of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

He was always so grateful for his Catholic faith. He was active in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church as a eucharistic minister, CCL instructor, member of the RCIA team for adult inquiries and member of the St. John Men's Club.

After his faith, family and friends, he did so enjoy his work as an OBGYN physician. He would often say when signing a birth certificate that he had attended to a miracle; for when one realizes from what this baby started and what he or she is now, it is always a miracle. He delivered thousands of those miracles.

He was passionate and so humbled to be allowed to participate in thousands of patients' health care. He loved learning and had an insatiable thirst for knowledge about all things. He was generous, gracious, thoughtful, hardworking, trustworthy and always full of energy. His absence is deeply felt every day.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Sal will be held on Monday, July 1, 2024 at St John the Baptist Catholic Church with visitation from 9:00am until Mass of Christian burial at 12:00pm. Burial will follow in LA National Cemetery, Zachary.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church building fund, 4727 McHugh Drive, Zachary, LA 70791.
