Have You Heard the Buzz? Z Hive Honey is Here!

Jul 09, 2024 09:41AM ● By Lauren Pope
A few weeks ago the ZHS FFA held a vote for the name of their new honey. There were a lot of great candidates, but they quickly narrowed it down to the top 4.

1. Z Hive
2. Swarm of Z’s
3. Broncos Honey Pot
4. All about the beeZ

While this journalist's personal favorite was "All about the beeZ" it, sadly, was not the winner. Instead, Zachary High's Honey is officially called Z Hive

We spoke to Melissa Brumbaugh, a ZHS faculty member and head of the school's FFA program who explained how Z Hive was started and what the Ag Dept is doing to with their 8 hives.
The Zachary AG Dept received a $10,000 dollar grant through the Louisiana Department of Agriculture last April. With the grant we were able to receive 8 bee hives. AG students along with the help and guidance of local beekeepers have learned how to bee keep. Recently we harvested 4 gallons of honey and have started making labels for our honey. Students came up with names and the community voted, and  Z Hive Honey was born.

The students absolutely LOVE it and be me to go back to the bees!

If you're interested in trying Z Hive Honey for yourself, you can buy it through the ZHS Ag Department. The big bottle is $5 and the small bottle is $2.
