When Chris Sasser heard about the Student Travel Schools (STS) foreign exchange program from Lacey Bueche, he saw an opportunity to bring diverse cultures into his family's Zachary home. Little did he know that this decision would lead to welcoming Marie from Austria, immersing her in a world of American traditions and teenage life.

The Sassers knew Marie was the perfect match when they watched her application video. "She said she was most looking forward to a big American Thanksgiving with turkey and football," Mr. Sasser recalls. "We go big for Thanksgiving, so we knew she'd fit right in."

Since arriving, Marie has embraced American high school life, joining cross-country, theater, and chess club - activities nonexistent in Austrian schools. Mr. Sasser notes the stark contrast in teenage independence between the two cultures. "Marie told us she would travel an hour each way by train for work in Austria. Her sister even had her own apartment during the summer."

Cultural differences extend to everyday experiences. "She couldn't believe the variety of sodas available at our local store," Mr. Sasser laughs. "Seeing it through her eyes made us appreciate it more."

The exchange goes both ways. "We're all trying to learn German and cook Austrian dishes," Mr. Sasser says proudly. As fall turns to winter, the Sassers are excited to show Marie more of Louisiana, especially looking forward to Mardi Gras and spring festivals.

Marie's journey to Zachary wasn't her initial plan - Hawaii was her first choice. But her openness to new experiences has paid off, creating a year of discovery and cultural exchange that neither Marie nor the Sassers will ever forget.
