The holidays are a season of giving, and there’s no better way to embody the spirit of generosity than by supporting the Zachary Food Pantry. While staples like canned goods and pasta are popular donations, there are many other essential items that often go overlooked. These thoughtful contributions can make an incredible impact for families in need, providing not just meals but also comfort and dignity.

This year, consider adding some of these often-forgotten but deeply appreciated items to your donation list:

Practical Pantry Essentials

  1. Boxed Milk – Perfect for families with children who receive cereal but often lack milk.
  2. Can Openers – Many canned goods go unused without this simple tool. Pop-top cans are a bonus!
  3. Oil – A luxury item for cooking essentials like Rice-A-Roni, which many families receive.
  4. Spices, Salt, and Pepper – These can turn basic ingredients into flavorful meals, making a house feel like a home.
  5. Sugar and Flour – Simple baking staples that can transform a pantry into a kitchen.

Little Luxuries That Show You Care

  1. Tea Bags and Coffee – Comforting beverages that provide a sense of normalcy and care.
  2. Cake Mix and Frosting – Help a family celebrate a child’s birthday with a homemade cake.
  3. Dishwashing Detergent – Expensive but vital for keeping kitchens clean and safe.
  4. Feminine Hygiene Products – A critical need that many women and girls go without.

Nutritious and Practical Food Items

  1. Tuna and Crackers – An easy, protein-packed lunch option.
  2. Fresh Produce – A healthy treat that families rarely receive but greatly appreciate.
  3. Eggs and Butter/Margarine – High-demand staples that are often in short supply.
  4. Fresh Meat – An incredibly rare but much-needed donation.

Creative and Seasonal Contributions

  1. Seeds – For families who enjoy gardening, seeds in the spring or summer provide food and joy.
  2. Stove Top Stuffing – A holiday favorite that everyone loves to see in their food box.

Making the Most of Your Donations

Families receiving assistance from food pantries are often working with limited tools or resources, so thoughtful donations like boxed milk, pop-top cans, or can openers can be life-changing. Items like spices, sugar, and flour elevate meals, while practical additions like dishwashing detergent and hygiene products meet essential everyday needs.

How to Donate

Donations can be dropped off at the Zachary Food Pantry during their regular hours.  Non-perishable items can be dropped off in the donation bin in front of the pantry.

If you prefer, monetary donations are also welcome and help the pantry purchase perishable goods such as fresh eggs, meat, and butter.
