Giving Back: Mark Matte

Mark Matte has lived in Zachary his whole life. The Zachary High graduate runs Matte's Plumbing but is known around town for much more than fixing pipes. His neighbors have long counted on his generosity, whether they're celebrating good times or facing tough ones.

During freezing temperatures last winter, Mark became a Godsend for many, selflessly donating his time and resources to help those in need. He provided essential supplies to protect homes from frozen pipes, offering relief and support when it was needed most.

Beyond his plumbing expertise, Mark serves Zachary Community Schools, not only by keeping the facilities in working order but by spreading joy among faculty and staff, surprising them with fresh fruit in the spring. Mark’s dedication to service was inspired by his father, Newman Matte, whose values shaped him deeply. After losing his father to COVID, Mark sought to honor his memory by giving back to the youth in the community. He began sponsoring Zachary High School’s FFA program, dedicating his time to teaching students valuable skills and treating them to lunch each month. His goal is to encourage these young individuals to explore trades, build futures, and carry forward the legacies of their families.

“Mr. Mark has been vital in helping us reach out to different community members and getting them to come talk to students and showcase their careers,” says Melissa Brumbaugh, ZHS Ag/FFA Teacher. “The students rave about his cooking and look forward to seeing Mr. Mark and tasting another one of his famous recipes. We are beyond thankful for him and his dedication to our students!”

Mark Matte's love for Zachary shows in everything he does, not just his plumbing work. He's spent years building up the community, supporting local schools, and helping preserve Zachary's history. The Zachary School Board will honor him January 21st for his work with local students and his dedication to making his hometown a better place.

The Zachary community is fortunate to have leaders like Mark Matte, whose actions instill lasting lessons of generosity, resilience, and love.

Mark was nominated by his daughter, Amy Lynch. Have someone in mind for a Giving Back nomination? Send an email to [email protected].
