It's Hammer Time: Build, Create, and Play at Home Depot’s Free Kids Workshops
Feb 28, 2025 09:59AM ● By Melanie McHenry, PhDEvery first Saturday, my dad (aka Pawpaw) bundles up the boys and heads to Home Depot, eager to see what creative project awaits them. As soon as we walk through the doors, their eyes widen with excitement, and they can barely contain their squeals of delight.

The first Saturday of the month is Kids Workshop Day at Home Depot, where children get to use real tools to build all sorts of amazing things – from birdhouses to picture frames. Last month, they made Valentine’s boxes. And let me tell you, Jack and Jacob are absolutely enthralled by the entire experience.

As soon as they don their tiny aprons, they're transformed into miniature carpenters, eager to get their hands dirty and create something truly special. The looks on their faces as they hammer and use screwdrivers (“they’re real mom!!”) their way through the project are absolutely priceless.

Pawpaw is equally enthusiastic, reveling in the opportunity to share his own love of DIY projects with his grandsons. Together, the three of them make a formidable team, measuring, cutting, and assembling their masterpiece with ease (depending on the project).
As the morning wears on, the boys' excitement only grows, and by the time they finish their project, they're beaming with pride. And the best part? They get to take their creation home with them, where it's proudly displayed for all to see.
For us, these monthly trips to Home Depot have become so much more than just a fun outing –they're a chance to spend quality time together as a family, to encourage creativity and self-expression, and to pass on a love of DIY projects to the next generation.
So if you're looking for a FREE, fun and engaging activity to do with your kids, I highly recommend
checking out Home Depot's Kids Workshop. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
As for Jack and Jacob, they're already counting down the days until next month's workshop, when they'll get to don their aprons once again and create something entirely new and amazing.
And Pawpaw? He's just happy to be along for the ride.
