Twist and Shout: Prepare For Potential Tornado Outbreak

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the Baton Rouge metro area under a Moderate Risk (level 4 of 5) for severe weather.

When a tornado warning popped up on my phone last spring, I have to admit – I freaked out a little. Okay, a lot. But after the storm passed, and I emerged from our cozy little bathroom safe and sound, I realized that I had learned a thing or two about tornado survival.
Before the Storm: Preparation is Key
1. Create a tornado evacuation plan: Identify the safest room in your home (for us, it's the bathroom or inner office), and make sure everyone knows how to get there quickly.
2. Stock up on supplies: Make sure you have a tornado survival kit with essentials like flashlights, water, non-perishable snacks, first aid supplies, portable cell phone charger, and a battery-powered radio.
3. Stay informed: Sign up for emergency alerts from your local city/government and keep a weather app on your phone.
4. Keep your emergency contact numbers and insurance policies nearby.

During the Storm: Stay Safe, Stay Calm
1. Seek shelter immediately: When a tornado warning is issued, don't wait – get to your safe room with your family and pets ASAP.
2. Stay away from windows: Windows can shatter and cause injury and are easier for debris to pass through so try to get to the center of the room.
3. Get under cover: Use a mattress, blanket, or pillows to protect yourself from debris.
After the Storm: Assessing Damage and Finding Help
1. Wait for the all-clear: Don't venture out until authorities give the okay. The scariest part of tornadoes is the cone of silence. It may not be over.
2. Assess damage: Take photos of damage to your home and property for insurance purposes. Drones are incredibly helpful.
3. Seek help if needed: If you're unable to access basic necessities like food, water or shelter, reach out to local authorities or relief organizations.
Tips for Navigating the Chaos
1. Stay calm and assess the damage: Take a deep breath and make a list of what's damaged and what's still intact.
2. Contact your insurance company: Take photos of the damage and make a list of your losses to help your insurance company process your claim.
3. Find a reputable contractor: Ask for references, check online reviews, and make sure they're licensed and insured.
4. Take care of yourself and your family: Make sure you're all safe and healthy and take time to relax and recharge. Don’t forget your littles are watching.
Take a deep breath, grab a cup of tea or coffee, and remember – this too shall pass. Stay safe, everyone!
