Dr. Liz Ezelle, DVM of Plains Veterinary Clinic, shares highlights from her recent family adventure through Utah’s stunning national parks.

How did you choose the destination?
We love hiking in the mountains, and Utah offers stunning natural beauty with unique geological formations like arches, hoodoos, and mesas. With five national parks to choose from, we were excited to explore three on this trip. We're also working on visiting all 50 states before we retire. Traveling as a family helps our kids grow in confidence, learn geography and culture, and—most importantly—gives us quality time together.

What part of the trip exceeded your expectations?
Zion’s dramatic cliffs and the chance to hike The Narrows were unforgettable. We were especially grateful that the trail was open despite potential snowmelt. The crystal-clear Virgin River winding through towering sandstone walls was simply breathtaking. We hiked 2–3 miles in and were rewarded with incredible views.

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for other travelers?
If it’s your first time in Utah, consider prioritizing Arches National Park over Capitol Reef. A dream itinerary would include the Grand Canyon, Arches, and Zion. If you're visiting Zion, book lodging inside the park—reservations fill up almost a year in advance, but it saves hours of shuttle wait time. Renting e-bikes is also a game changer! We got around the park easily and skipped the shuttle lines entirely. Utah is active and family-friendly, with great options for camping and glamping—like our stay in a luxurious dome near Capitol Reef where we stargazed in comfort.
