Beat the Heat: Summer Safety Tips for Your Pet
Summer in Louisiana means long, sunny days and soaring temperatures—and while it’s a season for fun, it also brings serious risks for our four-legged friends. At Y-Farms Kennels, we love caring for your pets like family, and that includes helping you keep them safe when the heat turns up.
Here are some simple, effective tips to protect your pet this summer:
🌡️ Hydration is a must. Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water. Refill bowls frequently, and consider adding ice cubes on extra hot days.
🐾 Walk wisely. The pavement can get scorching hot and burn your pet’s paws. Try to walk your dog early in the morning or after the sun goes down. A good rule of thumb: if it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for theirs.
🚗 Skip the car ride. It takes just minutes for a parked car to become dangerously hot—even with cracked windows. Leave pets at home if you can’t bring them inside with you.
🌳 Create shady retreats. Make sure outdoor pets have a cool, shaded place to relax. A shaded porch, doghouse with ventilation, or even a kiddie pool can make a big difference.
😓 Know the warning signs. Watch for heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, or vomiting—these may be signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke. If you see these symptoms, move your pet to a cool area and contact your vet immediately.
At Y-Farms Kennels, we keep your pets cool and comfortable all summer long with shaded outdoor runs, indoor rest areas, and plenty of fresh water and supervision. Whether you're headed out of town or just want peace of mind, we've got you covered.
