Keep Your Pup Calm This 4th of July

As we gear up for red, white, and BOOM this Independence Day, don’t forget about your four-legged family members. Fireworks can be a source of fun for human, but for many dogs, they’re a major source of stress.

At Y-Farms Kennels, we know dogs. And we know that a little preparation can go a long way in helping your pup feel safe and secure during the 4th of July festivities.

Here are a few tried-and-true tips from our team to help your dog stay calm and comfortable this holiday:

1. Create a Safe Space
Set up a quiet, cozy spot indoors where your dog can retreat when the noise starts. Use a crate if they’re crate-trained, or choose a small room with familiar blankets, toys, or even one of your worn T-shirts for comfort.

2. Turn on the Sound Machine
White noise, calming music, or even the TV can help drown out the unpredictable pops and booms of fireworks. Keep the volume at a soothing level to mask outdoor sounds.

3. Don’t Leave Them Alone
If possible, stay home with your dog or make sure someone they trust is nearby. Your presence is a natural comfort. If you do go out, make sure they’re indoors and secured before the fireworks begin.

4. Try a ThunderShirt or Calming Treats
A snug-fitting anxiety wrap like a ThunderShirt can help many dogs feel more secure. Natural calming treats or vet-approved supplements may also help take the edge off—but always check with your veterinarian first.

5. Exercise Early
A tired dog is a calm dog. Take a long walk or play an energetic game before sunset to help burn off excess energy.

6. Keep Them Secure
More pets go missing on the 4th of July than any other day of the year. Double-check that your yard is secure and that your dog’s ID tags and microchip information are up to date—just in case.
