Ashleigh McHugh has always had a heart for the voiceless and, as of July 1, she’s stepping into a role that makes that mission official. A longtime volunteer, foster, and advocate for animal welfare, McHugh will serve as the new Director of Operations for Must Luv Dogs Rescue. It’s a natural next step for someone who’s already poured years of sweat, tears, and love into the work of saving animals across the region.

Her reputation in the rescue community is legendary. McHugh has fostered more than 30 dogs, coordinated countless adoption events, and even suited up in camouflage to track down abandoned animals in the woods. She spends her spare time walking dogs, cleaning kennels, and speaking up for animals in need. And she has what outgoing director and Must Luv Dogs Founder Cindy Shotwell calls “velvet steel,” the tenderness of heart for rescue, but the strength to see the tough things through.

“I could list 10 times that she did things to save dogs that almost nobody else would've done,” Shotwell says. “She's fearless when it comes to confronting abusers in neglect situations, but also is a realist when it comes to trying to help with resources for those who love their animals, but struggle to properly care for them.”

“Ashleigh has a heart of gold and is one of the most empathetic humans I know,” Shotwell says. “She’s an old soul, a social justice warrior, a dedicated public servant, an animal lover and an active animal rights advocate.”

McHugh’s advocacy isn’t limited to animal rescue. Appointed Director of Economic Development for the City of Zachary in July 2023, she has brought that same passion to her professional life, both on and off the clock. She’s a champion for downtown revitalization, local businesses, and the events that make Zachary feel like home. From the Farmers Market and Downtown Live to the Really Hot Air Balloon Festival, McHugh works behind the scenes to strengthen the city’s economy and sense of community.

She previously served as Executive Director of the Zachary Chamber of Commerce and is now working to secure a National Main Street designation to preserve the charm of Zachary’s downtown while promoting long-term growth. Whether she’s advocating for animals, small businesses, or new investment, McHugh leads with purpose and heart.
