State Champs and West Point Appointments: Zachary's JROTC Program is on Fire

Sep 09, 2025 09:53AM ● By Lauren Pope

Three years ago, Zachary High School's Army JROTC program had 72 cadets. Today, it's at 187 and growing fast.

"We're the flagship JROTC program for Louisiana," says Sergeant First Class Arenteanis Adams, who recently spoke to ZHS seniors about their post-graduation options. "I told them everyone doesn't have to choose college, but they need to know they have choices. The Army helped me figure out what I wanted to do."

That growth didn't happen by accident. Since Lieutenant Colonel Darren Spears and Adams teamed up to run the Bronco Battalion, the program has been racking up wins both in competition and in life.

State Champions and West Point Bound

Last year was big. The Armed Drill Team won state championships in both Army and All-Service divisions, then headed to nationals in Daytona Beach. The Unarmed Drill Team also took home the Army state title. The Rifle Team grabbed third in state, and so did the Raiders.

But here's what really matters: three Zachary kids have gotten into West Point in the past two years. Malik and Mason Turner made it in 2023, followed by Brandon Hull in 2024. This year brought another Army JROTC scholarship winner and five National Guard enlistees.

"That's what this is about," Adams explains. "Opening doors."

More Than Marching

The cadets put in serious work beyond competitions. They logged over 100 community service hours at places like Port Hudson, helped with Junior Achievement events, and worked concession stands. They supported 40 different events throughout the year and provided color guard for ten community ceremonies.

Adams has seen plenty of action himself with seven combat tours split between Iraq and Afghanistan, plus the Purple Heart to prove it. Spears brings his own combat experience, including Ranger School and multiple Bronze Stars. But both say mentoring these kids is what drives them now.

What's Next

Fall is already packed. The Raiders head to Fort Knox for nationals in October. There's the usual football game support, homecoming parade, and Port Hudson cleanup. December brings their own Best Raider Competition right here at ZHS, plus the Christmas parade.

Seven different teams give cadets options: Armed and Unarmed Drill, Color Guard, Marksmanship, Raiders, Archery, and Academic Bowl. Something for everyone.

With enrollment more than doubling under their leadership, the program shows no signs of slowing down.
