In South Louisiana, Mardi Gras is all about connection—bringing people together
through color, celebration, and community pride. At the Baton Rouge Zoo, that spirit
comes to life through Krewe de Zoo, a Mardi Gras fundraiser that blends festive fun with
a meaningful mission: supporting wildlife conservation and animal care right here at
home.
Now in just its second year, Krewe de Zoo is quickly becoming a favorite way for
families and local organizations to celebrate the season while giving back to one of
Baton Rouge’s most cherished attractions.
How Krewe de Zoo Works
From early January through Mardi Gras Day, supporters can purchase Mardi Gras-
themed hang tags in purple, green, or gold for just $1, $3, or $5—either during a Zoo
visit or online. Each tag is proudly displayed throughout the Zoo, transforming the
grounds into a colorful, ever-growing celebration of community support.
Every tag purchased directly benefits the Baton Rouge Zoo Foundation, helping fund
animal care, conservation initiatives, educational programs, and ongoing improvements
across the Zoo.
New in 2026, Krewe de Zoo is expanding its community reach through a special
partnership with Southern University. This collaboration introduces a limited-edition $1
blue Jaguar hang tag honoring Lacumba the Jaguar, along with a $50 Southern
University Jaguar yard sign available by preorder. Together, the Zoo and Southern
University are creating a meaningful connection that celebrates school pride while
supporting conservation efforts.
Though still young, Krewe de Zoo is already making a big impact. The campaign offers
an affordable, family-friendly way to engage with the Zoo while creating a highly visible
show of support that grows throughout the season. It’s a joyful blend of South Louisiana
culture and conservation—one that feels inclusive, spirited, and uniquely Baton Rouge.
As Krewe de Zoo continues to grow, so does its vision: to build a lasting Mardi Gras
tradition that brings people together while making a real difference for the animals,
educators, and conservation work that define the Baton Rouge Zoo.
