Sunday celebration marks new tradition for city

Zachary will make history this Sunday when it hosts the city's first-ever Mardi Gras parade, bringing purple, green, and gold to city streets.

At a welcome reception and media launch Friday, organizers unveiled plans for the inaugural celebration and introduced the event's Grand Marshals: Regina Hartley Beard, a celebrated educator and Louisiana STEM advocate, and Doug Williams, the legendary quarterback who led the Washington Football Team to a Super Bowl victory. Williams' brother, Michael Williams, attended Friday's event on his behalf.

"Why not Zachary?" Planning Chairman Jamar Hebert asked during the event. The organization's answer: bringing people downtown, supporting local businesses, showcasing the heart of Zachary to the region, and creating new memories while honoring traditions.

"This is about unity," Hebert said. "It's meant to be built by community. It's a chance to showcase the heart of Zachary to the region."

Sunday's parade will feature local krewes and live entertainment from Cozy Len, Sweet Lysa, Arthur Gremillion, and Trey Pullen.

The day's schedule includes:

  • 10:00 AM: Staging & Line-Up Begins
  • 1:00 PM: Street Closures in Effect
  • 2:00 PM: Official Parade Start: The Grand Procession
  • 3:30 PM: Parade Encore Community Celebration

Hebert emphasized the accessible, family-friendly nature of the event. "Heroes don't always wear caps, sequins, or uniforms. We're everyday people," organizers noted. "We're celebrating everyday heroes."

The Zachary Police Department will provide enhanced security throughout the celebration, with additional officers and equipment deployed to ensure a safe, family-friendly environment.

According to Hebert, the goal extends beyond a single parade. "This is a historic day for Zachary," he said. "We're celebrating who we are and where we are and we're building something that can become a tradition."
