Bleeding Gums Aren't Normal: What They're Telling You About Your Health
Feb 19, 2025 12:20PM ● By Ashley EvansThe Difference Between Healthy Gums and Early-Stage Gum Disease
Let me give you a scenario. Many of my patients reveal this to me at their first visit: It’s been years since they last saw a dentist—sometimes two, three, or even five. One day, they notice bleeding after brushing. Some experience bad breath or feel a buildup of plaque and tartar on their front teeth.

At the new patient exam, we take a lot of records, including X-rays and photos. I show patients images of healthy gums—pink, firm, and snug around the teeth. Then, using a mirror and photos, I show them their own teeth. This isn’t to shame but to educate. Most patients quickly recognize whether their oral health is on track or if something is wrong.
Why Bleeding Gums Shouldn't Be Ignored
For patients with healthy gums, we recommend routine cleanings every six months. But for those with bleeding, puffy gums, bad breath, and plaque buildup, the diagnosis is often gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease.

At this stage, X-rays typically show no bone loss. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontal disease, a more severe condition where bacteria destroy the bone supporting your teeth. Patients with periodontal disease may experience:
Red, swollen, and painful gums
Persistent bleeding
Tooth shifting due to excessive tartar buildup
Severe bad breath
Pain while eating and drinking
Tooth loss
Simple Steps to Reverse Early Gum Disease
The good news? Gingivitis is completely reversible with a few simple steps:
Brush effectively twice a day using fluoride toothpaste.
Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth.
Consider mouthwash for fresher breath (though it’s not necessary for gum health).
When in doubt, see your dentist for a check-up. Don’t wait until symptoms worsen—regular dental visits are crucial for maintaining your oral and overall health.
If you’ve noticed bleeding gums, schedule an appointment today. Your smile deserves the best care!
