Walking Tips for National Walking Month

  1. Stay hydrated: Louisiana gets hot in May, so bring water on your walks
  2. Wear proper footwear: "The right shoes make all the difference," says Dr. Lindow. He specifically recommends Brooks walking and running shoes for their superior support and cushioning that can help prevent common walking-related foot problems.
  3. Apply sunscreen: Many of our trails have limited shade coverage
  4. Check park hours: Most parks are open from sunrise to sunset
  5. Bring bug spray: Especially important on woodland trails
  6. Start slow: If you're new to walking regularly, begin with shorter routes like Zachary Youth Park before attempting longer trails

"As a podiatrist, I often emphasize that walking is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to support overall foot health and general well-being. Regular walking improves circulation, strengthens the muscles and bones in your feet and legs, helps maintain a healthy weight, and reduces the risk of chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. It’s a low-impact activity that promotes joint mobility and balance which is key to preventing injuries as we age. Just 30 minutes a day can make a lasting difference." says Dr. Lindow.

This National Walking Month, take advantage of these beautiful local trails to establish a walking routine that can benefit your health year-round.
