Patterns, Peaks & Pools: Behind the Lens With Chris Sasser

Zachary resident Chris Sasser finds himself underwater with a male model in a waterlogged seersucker suit. He holds his breath while clicking away on the camera, hoping to get the shot before he runs out of air.
Just a week before, he teetered at the edge of the Grand Canyon, capturing majestic wide-angle shots from his iPhone 16 Pro on a quick getaway with his family.
The next week, he’s on what some might call a “double shoot” at the gun range in Baton Rouge, shooting shots of the shooter with his trusty Canon R6 Mark II. Then he’s off to Mackinac Island, Michigan, posing in a seersucker suit on the world’s largest front porch at the Grand Hotel (cover image). June 12 was National Seersucker Day, and Sasser was there to celebrate the occasion.
Jetsetting Sasser is a photographer, videographer, and digital content creator for Lipsey’s of Baton Rouge, one of the country’s largest firearms distributors, as well as Haspel, the original creators of the seersucker suit. Though completely separate, both companies are owned by the same family, and Sasser handles the photography and video production for both.
At 42, Sasser doesn’t hold a formal degree in photography—he’s self-taught, he says, with plenty of trial and error and a “PhD from YouTube University.” From natural wonders to national brands, his eye for elegance and composition is instinctive—something no classroom can teach.
About Haspel
More than a century ago, the patriarch of the Lipsey family of Baton Rouge brought seersucker mainstream. Previously, it was a poor man’s thread–cheap, durable, no ironing required–until New Orleans clothier Joseph Haspel began designing gentlemen's suits out of it to bring comfort to businessmen working in these hot Louisiana summers. The brand was sold multiple times over the decades, until the descendants of Haspel–the Lipsey family–bought it back in 1998. Today, the brand's storefront is entirely online, and Zachary's own Chris Sasser helps to shape the iconic brand's modern day image.
