As kids and teens gear up for fall sports, whether it’s football, volleyball, cross country, or cheer, now’s the perfect time to think about more than just jerseys and gear. Foot and ankle health is one of the most overlooked aspects of athletic performance and injury prevention.
Dr. Kyle Lindow, a board-certified podiatrist serving families in Zachary and surrounding areas at the Louisiana Foot & Ankle Specialty Center on Old Scenic Highway, says he sees a spike in sports-related foot and ankle injuries every fall.
“Most of these injuries are completely preventable with the right footwear, training techniques, and early intervention,” says Dr. Lindow.
Common Injuries in Young Athletes
Ankle sprains and strains
Heel pain (often from Sever’s disease)
Stress fractures from overuse
Tendonitis and shin splints
Ingrown toenails or blisters from improper shoes
Prevention is the Best Play
Dr. Lindow recommends these quick tips for keeping student-athletes on their feet this season:
Replace last year’s shoes—feet grow quickly!
Choose sport-specific shoes with good arch support.
Warm up and stretch before practices and games.
Don’t ignore pain—early treatment prevents long-term problems.
Schedule a Fall Sports Foot & Ankle Checkup
