Feb 29, 2024 01:01PM ● By Lauren Pope

The recent Zachary City Council meeting, held to discuss a variety of local governance issues, saw significant developments across multiple areas, from employee recognition to important community projects and safety concerns.

Employee Recognition

A key highlight was the honors and recognition segment, acknowledging employees for their dedication and years of service:

  • 5 Years of Service: Shelby Allen and Samara Robertson
  • 10 Years of Service: Twila Gian and Daryl Wilcox
  • 15 Years of Service: Dana Lajeune
  • 20 Years of Service: Clarence Williams and Scott Masterson

This acknowledgment underscores the city's appreciation for its long-serving employees, celebrating their contributions to the community.

Infrastructure Projects

The council approved several critical infrastructure projects, signaling progress in road, water, and gas services:

  • 2023 Road Project: Received a substantial completion certificate, indicating progress in enhancing local road infrastructure.
  • Water and Gas Projects: Approved payment to Grinder Drilling Services for water well contract work and to Stricklin and Porter Construction for the construction of restrooms at Zachary Youth Park, reflecting ongoing improvements in community facilities.

Special Event Permits

The meeting also discussed permits for upcoming special events, including the Lane Foundation Chili Cookoff and the Cinco De Mayo event, emphasizing the city's vibrant community life and support for local festivities.

Home Rule Charter Commission (HRCC) Concerns

A presentation by Mr. Pete Charlet highlighted concerns regarding changes proposed by the HRCC, particularly the shift of authority from the council to the Chief Administrative Officer under certain conditions. This sparked a debate about maintaining the balance of power within local government.

Financial and Legal Matters

Discussions on financial health included approval of a resolution required by the Capital Region Area Flood Plain Task Force and deliberation on millage rates, with a motion to maintain the current rate to support city finances without imposing undue tax increases on residents. There was also discussion about a lewdness ordinance and how it could relate to small children who just need to pee. Thankfully, sanity prevailed here with a reassurance that officer discretion would play a role in enforcement.

Zoning and Development

Rezoning requests were approved, facilitating the development of a spa, hair or nail salon on Old Scenic Highway, and a duplex complex on Lee Street, reflecting the city's growth and evolving community needs.

Public Safety and Community Concerns

Public safety was a paramount concern, highlighted by Perry Williams' report of a recent neighborhood "shootout." The council acknowledged the urgency of addressing safety and announced the formation of a Crime Prevention Commission to explore proactive solutions.

Concluding Actions

The meeting concluded with appointments to council positions and committees, emphasizing the council's role in economic development and community engagement. Despite challenges, the council's actions reflect a commitment to progress, safety, and the well-being of Zachary's residents.

This meeting underscored the city council's dedication to addressing the immediate and long-term needs of the community, balancing development with preserving the quality of life for all residents.
