When Friendship Becomes Family

As told by Tamara Dayton, Carson’s Mother, Administrator at The Lodge at Lane

The first thing that comes to mind when I read about unlikely friendships is the bond between my 20-year-old college student son, Carson, and one of our residents, 91-year-old Peggy Harrell. They share a truly special connection.

Peggy and Carson’s paternal grandmother had been best friends since they were eight years old. When Carson’s grandmother moved into The Lodge during her battle with dementia, Carson visited often and during those visits, he formed a meaningful friendship with Peggy.

His grandmother passed away in 2024, and at 18, Carson suddenly found himself without any grandparents. Even after her passing, he continued going to The Lodge to spend time with Peggy whenever he was home from school. The affection between them is unmistakable.

Carson looks at Peggy much like a grandmother figure. And although Peggy has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren of her own, she seems to have folded Carson into her heart as one of them. They talk often, and she offers him wisdom, encouragement, and comfort.

It’s very sweet to witness.
